The Home Minister has clarified that a ‘minuscule technical leak’ had occurred at the chemical factory in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam where styrene gas leak claimed 11 lives on Thursday. The clarification comes amidst reports that there was a second gas leak at the LG Chem plant. The MHA said teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) are on the ground to support the local administration.
Meanwhile, at least 25 people are still in critical condition. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday visited Vizag and met the affected locals. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 crore and has directed the Arogyasri trust to cover all medical bills of the gas leak patients. The government has already ordered a high-level inquiry into the tragedy that was reminiscent of the horrific Bhopal gas leak tragedy that killed thousands leftover 15,000 exposed to the poisonous gas.
