Accusing the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) of completely ignoring its basic duty to provide proper healthcare facilities to citizens during the last five decades. A PIL has urged the High Court to direct NMC and State Government to establish a proper district-level hospital and mental hospital at Nagpur.
The PIL filed by activists Satyavrat alias Mannu Datta and Dharamdas Badge stated that Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) hospitals are part of medical colleges.
While as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) norm, a separate district-level hospital must be established. NMC barely has 20 MBBS doctors and 15 BAMS and Homeopathy doctors for its 36 dispensaries to handle the health of over 30 lakh Nagpurians. The PIL claimed while lamenting consistent neglect of authorities towards putting in place a robust system.
A division bench consisting of Justice Ravi Deshpande and Justice Amit Borkar issued a formal notice to the State Government, NMC, and district authorities and made it returnable after eight weeks. Adv C P Chandurkar appeared for the petitioners.
